Catch Me If You Can (2002)

Genre: Crime, Drama, Biopic

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks

Let’s begin the binge with some high-speed cat-and-mouse chase. One of the most exciting crime comedies from Spielberg, Catch Me If You Can is based on the real-life exploits of Frank Abagnale Jr., a conman. In his semi-autobiographical book, Frank wrote that he successfully conned people of millions of dollars, posing as a pilot, a doctor and a prosecutor. And all this, before his 19th birthday!

The magnanimous duo of Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks as the conman and the FBI Agent chasing him respectively bring a certain charm to the characters that makes them so lovable that you are unable to pick a side!

What could have been a direct book-to-silver screen adaptation of the memoir turns into a classic crime comedy that makes Spielberg a household name for being versatile.

Minority Report (2002)

Genre: Sci-Fi, Thriller

Starring: Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton

The second film, Minority Report, also gets your heart racing with the twists and turns in the plot. Set in the year of 2054, the film talks about a time when technology is so amazing, it can predict a crime, before it is committed. A ‘PreCrime’ department led by a young and charming Tom Cruise, playing Chief John Anderton is all for erasing crime from the society. However, his life turns upside down when the system predicts that he will commit a crime!

Anderton hence, is pushed into a race against time where he has to survive and prove his innocence. Who is against him? The entire system that he put his trust in!

Spielberg, as a visionary filmmaker ensures that the film is just as entertaining and thrilling as it sounds. Sleek visuals, stunning action sequences (of course, owing to our very own Tom Cruise) and a supertight screenplay, Minority Report stands out as a crime drama and sci-fi thriller. A genre blend that is a masterpiece, count us in!

Schindler’s List (1993)

Genre: Historical Drama

Starring: Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley

Take a break from the cut-throat world of crime and police procedurals with one of the most powerful films ever, Schindler’s List. Steven Spielberg put his heart and soul into a story to bring out a film that is less a source of entertainment, but more a history lesson. And one that stays with you for a very long time.

Shot in black and white for a timeless effect, Schindler’s List tells the story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who wants nothing to do with the war that is ravaging the world but is only interested in the growth of his business empire. With the help of his smart and compassionate assistant, Oskar becomes a hero for a thousand Jews as he employs them in his factories.

The film has two very profound journeys that make you sit tight and never move your eyes off the screen. One, the change that is brought about in Oskar – the one that turns the shrewd businessman into a humble human being who is upset on not doing enough. And two, the story of the Jewish predicament that is brought out grotesquely just to remind the audience of their pain.

The Terminal (2004)

Genre: Comedy Drama

Starring: Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones

In an interview, Steven Spielberg had mentioned that after all-the heavy historical dramas and fast-paced crime dramas, he wanted to make something that lets the audience sit back, relax and have a smile on their faces throughout the run of the film. And hence, he came up with the brilliant, heart-warming tale of a European resident stuck in New York’s JFK Airport.

The Terminal follows the story of Viktor Navorski, a man from the fictional country of Krakozhia, who finds himself stuck in the international airport in New York City when he learns that his country came under military rule during his flight. Now, with an invalid passport, he can neither be a visitor in the U.S.A. nor go back to his nation. He decides to make a home out of the airport!

Tom Hanks as Viktor is delightful and is loved by the audience and airport staff alike. Steven Spielberg crafts a world where bureaucracy meets humanity. It’s a modern tale that gently critiques the government and the bureaucracy, through a feel-good story!

Jurassic Park (1999)

Genre: Sci-Fi, Adventure

Starring: Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill

No Spielberg binge is complete without dinosaurs. Jurassic Park remains a landmark achievement for creating a theme park in a film! And a theme park where cloned dinosaurs are brought to life – and then, visitors enter the park leading to major chaos!

From the breathtaking first reveal of the Brachiosaurus to the heart-pounding T-Rex attack, this film still holds up brilliantly. The mix of suspense, awe, and Spielberg’s sense of wonder makes Jurassic Park a thrilling ride from start to finish.
