Amidst the chaos of the Hindu-Muslim riots that erupted during the Partition, Tara valiantly saves Sakina from a ferocious mob. However, the serenity shatters when Sakina stumbles upon an old newspaper featuring a photograph of her father (Amrish Puri). She had believed he was killed during the violent riots of the partition. Shocked and confused, she contacts her father from the Pakistani Consulate in Delhi, only to discover he is now the Mayor of Lahore. Her father, with his own plans and aspirations, arranges for her to marry a Pakistani man, pursue a political career, and forget her life in India, including her marriage and son. Visa troubles at the last moment force Tara and their son to stay in India while Sakina heads to Lahore.
